Thomas Maes

In a world full of high-tech, says painter Thomas Maes,
I try to give the high-tech some more soul and natural
beauty. His paintings make good on that promise. Maes
mixes a technicians skill at representation with a Surrealist
ability to create a world in which realistic objects are placed in a dreamlike framework. He mixes abstract shapes with natural objects, blurring the lines between the physical world and the world of the imagination. A tree may emerge from an abstract
platform, or a realistic branch sprout geometric shapes as
well as leaves. Computer screens inhabit the same space as totemic shapes that look as if they could have come from the ancient world.
But while there is a sense of worlds intersecting in Maess
work, his images also radiate a peaceful aura. Thanks to his subtle eye for color, his backgrounds evoke sun-filled skies, generating a contemplative air. The artist says that he likes to paint in oils because of the smoothness and detail you can achieve. That evenness and intricacy account for his talent at depicting objects that, whether realistic or abstract, seem three-dimensional. And the coupling of that smoothness with his unique compositions makes his work powerful.
Born in Belgium, Thomas Maes shows his work widely and
now lives and works on the island of Crete.
